The Cabbage

Cultivation

We grow from seedlings that do not need high temperatures – for a while. They can withstand even below 0 ° C. The shoots are sensitive to weeds. Staking is not necessary. In summer, due to the drought, we use shoots with ground-root bread.

Distances

Small plants between the rows at least 30 cm, among the plants in a row at least 30 cm. For the late cabbage, we increase the distances by 20 cm, for large heads of 40 cm.

Position

Sunny in half shade.

Quantity

From 5 to 10 plants per person.

Date of sowing

For the shoots from February onwards. The period of preparation of the shoots depends on the variety – to cultivate the shoots, we need 30 to 40 days. Instead, cabbage can stay on the garden until the end of November. The early cabbage can then be transplanted again in September, for acidification instead until the beginning of July. It sprouts for ten days.

Composting

We fertilize with manure or house compost. We grow on the first plot. Mineral fertilizers must contain more potassium and less nitrogen and phosphorus. Varieties of 90 and more days can be further fertilized with nitrogen. The mixture of nettles is also good. If the inside of the heads rots, the boron may be missing.

Watering

Especially in the period of head formation, we water regularly – twice a week up to a depth of 30 cm. If too many plants ripen at the same time, we stop the flow of water by cutting a part of the root system with the hoe or by gently turning the heads up to a quarter of a turn.

Good neighbors

Celery, marigold, marigold, sage, thyme, cumin, mint, dill, chamomile, chard, broad beans, chives, leek, endive, cucumber, aubergine, sweet corn. When the cabbage does not need much space, we plant low peas, low beans, spinach, or curly-leaf blonde lettuce in the middle. In the middle of the cabbage, we plant the celery. Aromatic herbs drive away harmful animals.

Bad neighbors

onion, tomato

Diseases and pests

The black rot of the crucifers, hernia of crucifers, caterpillars of butterflies and moths, larvae of the cruciferous fly, cabbage cecidomia. Soil is good against water, moderate fertilization, hoeing, and watering with the seaweed concoction. For four years, we will not plant crucifers on the same place. Against the pests, it is good to cover with the veil, mixed crops with celery, lettuce or spinach, put the remains of tomatoes among the plants.

Collection

Because it is cold-resistant, we cut it as long as possible for use as needed. We keep it in crates in a cold and damp environment. It resists even for several months. For acidification, it is necessary to choose the right variety. We must not use pesticides and exaggerate with nitrogen.

Supply

The leaf part is useful, eaten fresh or in a wide range of cooked and roasted dishes. Especially in winter, feeding is an important source of vitamins to other useful substances.

Important

The early varieties mature in 50 days, the later ones in 180 days (only suitable for a warm climate). For acidification, the varieties that need at least 90 days are suitable. Since we can grow it all summer, we only plant some seedlings at the same time.

Special features

We know the red and white cabbage, once it was divided into early and late cabbage. For our climate, native species are more suitable than hybrids. The following varieties are suitable for acidification: Ljubljana, Kranj, and Varasdino cabbage.
